Who must pay Minnesota estimated tax?

You must pay estimated tax if you expect to owe $500 or more in Minnesota income tax after subtracting your withholding and refundable credits.

How do you avoid a Minnesota underpayment penalty?

Estimated payments plus withholding and refundable credits must equal either 90% of the current year's original tax liability (66.7% farmers/commercial fishermen) or 100% of the prior year's total tax liability (110% if federal AGI is more than $150,000; the page does not state a separate MFS figure). Nonresidents/part-year residents need at least $1 of prior-year Minnesota liability to use the prior-year rule. The January 15 payment is not needed if the return is filed and paid in full by January 31.
